One of the greatest rivalries in Australian sport between Danny Green and Anthony Mundine finally came to a close on February  3rd 2017.  After 10 long years, “The Green Machine” defeated “The Mouth” and affirmed his legacy as one of Australia’s all-time greatest fighters, but it wasn’t without controversy.

Cheap shots were thrown and it was a tight fight. Some innovative Australians thought it would be a good idea to live stream the Foxtel footage on their Facebook page with an estimated 200,000 logging on at one stage to watch the fight for free, Foxtel decided that they would take action against the Aussies live streaming the event and Australia responded by crowd funding to fight Foxtel.

Mundine protested the decision with the Australian National Boxing Federation (ANBF) following the bout questioning several areas of the fight, including the way it was scored, penalties imposed on Mundine during the contest and claims of bias among the judges.

“All it is is an appeal, it doesn’t mean anythings going to happen” Green said. “I expect nothing less from such a poor sport.” Green also made comment that Mundine “showed disgraceful sportsmanship in the ring” and that the illegal Mundine punch inside the opening minute was a “dog shot” that prevented him from dominating the fight.

Independent judges from CompuBox, a respected American-based fight analyst, were engaged and locked into three separate rooms with videos of the fight and new scorecards.  The independent judges reviewed the decision and it was confirmed unanimously that Green won fair and square.  Greens volume (60.3 punches per round to Mundines 35.6) and body punching (40 of 57 jab connects, 44 of 86 landed power shots and 84 of 143 overall) superseded Mundines accuracy in terms of getting them majority decision.

Mundine and his fans were filthy with the result but “it’s comprehensive, it’s across-the-board, it’s absolute and there couldn’t be any more clarity.  All it does is indicate what I already knew and outlines to the uneducated and ill-informed, that I clearly won that fight.” Green said

Controversy aside Foxtel should be happy that the end to this bitter rivalry was watched buy the second-largest-pay-per-view television audience reported in Australia, eclipsed only by their stoush 11 years ago, the fighters should be happy as they both pocketed up to $10 million each from the bout and the majority of Australian’s are be happy because the biggest “Mouth” in sport has been silenced.
